Message from Leadership

Laura Jaramillo LISC Houston Executive Director
In 2024, with a full team in place and working cohesively, we approached our work with clear purpose and focused intention. The result was a year of meaningful progress—rooted in partnership, driven by inclusion, and guided by the belief that thriving communities are built deliberately, not by chance.
We began the year by convening over 180 partners and stakeholders at our inaugural Envision: State of Communities conference, where we shared insights from our research and analysis conducted in the second half of 2023. (read the report HERE). This gathering set the tone for the months ahead: bold thinking paired with on-the-ground action.
Throughout the year, we continued to deepen our investment in people and places. Through GO Neighborhoods, we provided investments to three communities, helping to fuel local visions for change. We awarded 15 Small Grants to grassroots organizations working in creative placemaking, disaster resilience, and sports/recreation—strengthening both neighborhood identity and capacity.
We also celebrated the growth of our Training for Trainers (T4T) program, graduating 15 new community leaders who joined our network of over 200 T4T ambassadors. Their capstone projects—focused on economic development, health and well-being, and housing equity—demonstrated the power of resident-led solutions.
And for the first time, we awarded LISC Pre-Development and Preservation grants to six local organizations developing a combined 234 affordable housing units, helping preserve and expand access to stable, quality homes. We also continue our efforts around Own The HOU, to advance homeownership opportunities for Harris County residents.
To support economic growth, we continued to support our Financial Opportunity Center® network, integral partners for almost two decades in advancing financial stability. We also engaged six non-profits to build their capacity around disaster resiliency, so they are prepared to weather future storms.
And finally, we closed out the year with a celebration of our 35th anniversary! Community leaders, partners and former LISCers gathered for an elegant evening filled with food, music, and elevating all the vital work we’ve led since 1989.
Every milestone we achieved reflects our shared commitment to building community—intentionally, inclusively, and on purpose. Thank you for being part of this journey. We look forward to what we’ll accomplish together in the year ahead.

Our Impact Stories
We believe lasting change begins with listening. And we support communities with tools, trust, and purpose—investing in housing, businesses, local leaders, and community spaces. In 2024, our work reflected the power of partnerships and the everyday hopes of residents building stronger neighborhoods and brighter futures together. Our work included:
Training 4 Trainers
In December 2024, LISC Houston’s Training 4 Trainers (T4T) program celebrated the graduation of 15 leaders at a joyful ceremony. Joined by family, friends, and community partners, the graduates became part of a growing network of over 200 T4T alumni committed to leading change—on purpose—across Houston.
The event highlighted capstone projects that demonstrated the cohort’s passion and purpose in action: a mural project boosting economic development in the East End, the expansion of a 5th Ward community garden to address food insecurity, and resident-led engagement in a HUD Choice Neighborhood initiative at Irvinton Village. The ceremony reflected the heart of T4T: intentional leadership rooted in community.
Pre-Development & Preservation Grants
In 2024, LISC Houston launched a new way to support local housing efforts. For the first time, we awarded Pre-Development and Preservation Grants to six organizations working to bring much-needed affordable housing to Greater Houston. This milestone reflects our deeper commitment to tackling the region’s housing challenges with focus and intention. The selected projects span a wide range of solutions—from single-family homes to multi-family housing for seniors—each rooted in community need. We’re especially proud to support an emerging developer and graduate from our SEED Academy, who represent the next generation of leaders shaping equitable, sustainable neighborhoods.

Thanks to funding from LISC, we can offer homes at prices that remain accessible to the hardworking families we serve. As we continue our mission to build affordable homes and communities, infrastructure grants like those from LISC play a vital role in bridging the affordability gap. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and support.”

LISC and Procter & Gamble Helped Independently-Owned Childcare Businesses
In conjunction with Proctor & Gamble, LISC partnered with Collaborative for Children, a Houston non-profit, to help home-based childcare providers stabilize business operations, upgrade facilities and improve the quality of early learning programs. Ten home-based providers participated in training sessions, business coaching, and peer-to-peer learning.
Alongside these services, the Collaborative provided essential supplies and equipment to improve facilities. What’s more, the Collaborative connected providers to digital readiness courses and coaching and positioned them to leverage future supports.
Necole Griffin, owner of Lael Childcare Academy, is thrilled with the enhancements she’s been able to make to her facility thanks to the program. “I support nursing mothers, so this refrigerator came in handy to store lots of milk and all of the essentials for this age group,” said Griffin, who also received supplies and storage solutions for a newly renovated preschool classroom. “I appreciate all of the support in helping home businesses like mine continue to thrive.”
Communications
In 2024, we put intention behind every post, story, and share—using our platforms to spotlight the powerful work happening in Houston and beyond. With a consistent cadence of monthly newsletters and regularly scheduled social media content, we brought our mission to life online, one story at a time.
Our audience responded. We doubled our LinkedIn followers and saw steady growth in engagement across all platforms. Whether highlighting local partners, national insights, or moments of community celebration, our communications efforts helped build stronger connections and a deeper sense of shared purpose.
