These nonprofits give small businesses what they need to survive and thrive
So much goes into the relationship between small businesses and the nonprofit business development organizations (BDOs) that are dedicated to supporting them and helping them grow. The three BDOs profiled here, longtime LISC partners, have gone above and beyond to help entrepreneurs survive the COVID-19 pandemic. They know that the wellbeing of small businesses means jobs preserved, goods and services are accessible to the community, and local economies have a better chance of weathering the pandemic-borne recession.

Grand opening of their Patina Mountain Preserve Wellness Center and Dunlap Point Housing Community
On March 24th we celebrated the opening of Dunlap Pointe, a 54-unit permanent supportive housing community designed to serve chronically homeless persons including a focus on veterans.
Situated on the edge of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, this secured community is accessed through a single point of entry. As one part of a two-part campus, Dunlap Pointe is adjacent to Patina Mountain Preserve, a 55-bed congregate living community. Together, these developments will create a safe and secure environment with rich and holistic supportive services, using best practices from NAC’s 45+ year history serving the residents of Phoenix.

For formerly incarcerated women in Arizona, a fair chance at financial wellness
The Arouet Foundation supports women returning from incarceration in Phoenix, helping them work toward financial stability and avoid recidivism—beginning while they are still imprisoned. The Foundation’s Alison Rapping sat down with LISC to explain how the Financial Opportunity Center model, combined with other wrap-around services, has been extraordinarily successful in assisting clients to get past the unjust obstacles that block the progress of so many returning citizens.

Anti-displacement strategies help preserve what’s special about commercial corridor ecosystems
Roosevelt Row, the stretch of downtown Phoenix made popular by artists and small business owners, is a lot of things to a lot of people. Today, it is also well-known for what it is not: It is nothing, goes the common lament, like it used to be. Redevelopment removed a lot of the physical character and the people who made the cultural vibe in the Roosevelt corridor so popular that developers wanted to be part of it, even if it meant capitalizing with projects that caused displacement.
